Katniss has a friend that she hunts with by the name of Gale. Since she hunted to feed her family, she became very skillful with a bow and arrow. Gale mentions running away in the woods and Katniss thinks about taking that option many times throughout the book and she sometimes wishes she would have gone. Her bow and arrow will later become her biggest attribute in the games.

Peeta was the baker's son in District 12. He was chosen in the reaping to be the male tribute. Ever since he has seen Katniss he has falling madly in love with her. He keeps his distance from her on the train to the capital and does not really talk to her.
Before she heads off to the games, Madge, the mayor's daughter, gives Katniss a mockingjay pin. She is allowed to carry this throughout the games as a reminder of her District. It provides the sweet voice of her dad, which earlier in her life died from a coal mining accident. It also provides comfort for her many times throughout the games, reminding her of Prim and home.
Haymitch is the only winner ever from District 12 and is the only person that can prepare them for what is to come. During the games he is allowed to send gifts that sponsors send throughout the games. He tutors both Peeta and Katniss on how to win the games.

It seems that Peeta teams up with the Careers to try and get rid of Katniss but the whole time he is really protecting her. When he comes upon Katniss before the Careers do, he screams at her to run away. Katniss grows confused if Peeta's feelings for her are actually sincere of if they are all an act like most of hers are.
About half way through the games, Katniss teams up with Rue, the female tribute from District 11. She is a small and young girl and she reminds her of Prim, which gives her an instant connection to her. Katniss and Rue teaming up is the reason why the Careers food supply became destroyed, which gives them a fighting chance to survive. Once Rue does not return to camp, she knows something is wrong. When she goes out looking for her, she finds Rue all tangled up in a tree stuck in a trap. When she tries to save her, A boy from District 1 stabs her in the side, which ends up being fatal. Katniss shoots the boy in the neck with an arrow and also kills him.
It is clear that the Capital wants this love story to continue so they decide that there can be two winners of THG but they both must be from the same Capital. Peeta and Katniss are the only District with both the male and female tributes left. Katniss comes among Peeta buried in mud with a terrible leg and tracker jacker wounds. They spend many nights in a cave that they have found and they take turns looking after each other. Peeta never once becomes back to his 100% health through the rest of the story. While in the cave, Katniss really plays to the audience about the love between Peeta and her. Many kisses and deep conversations provides gifts given from the sponsors to try and nurse Peeta back to health.

When the story comes down to the fiercest tribute of them all Cato, mutant wolves are released among the finalists. In a desperate survival of life between the 3, Cato ends up being eaten by he vicious wolves.
Just when they thought they have won, another announcement is made, there would once again be only one winner. Katniss and Peeta decide to both commit a double suicide by eating poisonous berries. This upsets the Capitol and it is decided that they are now both the winners.
As Peeta and Katniss are on the train on their way back to their Districts, Katniss tells Peeta that the feelings that she had for him are fake. This crushes Peeta on the inside and he avoids looking at Katniss for the remainder of the celebration although Katniss needs him to make it through the Capitol.
